Dawyck Botanic Garden - A Spectacular Woodland Garden

In the depths of the Scottish Borders countryside, Dawyck Botanic Garden has a stunning collection of trees and shrubs. With over 300 years of tree planting, Dawyck boasts a world famous arboreta with mature specimens of Brewer’s Spruce, the unique Dawyck Beech and some giant trees from North America which are over forty metres tall.

These majestic specimens provide an impressive backdrop for the series of walks that give a glimpse into the wealth of plants on display such as the highly scented azaleas and unusually hardy rhododendrons. The Garden is the home to, not only a host of botanical wonders, but also an abundance of wildlife. As you meander through the Heron Wood Reserve you can find out more about the fascinating world of fungi, lichens and mosses and if you are lucky, you might see a red squirrel or a colourful woodpecker too. Make sure you take a stroll along the Beech Walk as the reward is a wonderful tree top view of Dawyck and the Tweed Valley beyond.

Enjoyable trails make exploring fun. The conservation work Dawyck is involved in is highlighted in the Scottish Rare Plant Trail and a tribute to the legacy left by the Scottish Explorer David Douglas is featured in another interesting trail.

Before you head for home, why not sample some home-baking and light refreshments in The Conservatory and browse through the thoughtfully selected gifts, souvenirs, local crafts and plants – some seen growing in the Garden. Open from 1 March until 31 October (9.30am until 6pm), the Garden has something for all the family to enjoy.
