A lively and friendly working museum

For nearly 200 years Walsall people have been making some of the world`s finest saddlery and leathergoods. Through its displays, atmospheric workshops and demonstrations, the Leather Museum aims to celebrate this tradition. The museum is housed in an Victorian factory building, which has been beautifully restored, and now provides a fascinating introduction to the story of Walsall`s leather trades. The displays feature fine examples of local craftsmanship, including saddles for royalty. A highlight of the tour is the opportunity to meet local leatherworkers, who are happy to share some of their skills and memories with visitors.
The museum has an extensive shop selling purses, wallets, bags and belts made by some of Walsall`s 90 or so leather factories.And there is also a delightful cafe specialising in home-cooked cakes, snacks and light lunches. The museum has a lively programme of special events taking place throughout the year and a leaflet giving details of forthcoming events is available on request.
